Life After Europe

So, now that the great Eurotrip is over, life has slowed down rather dramatically. For one thing, I have to adjust to living back at my parents house (hopefully only temporarily). I rearranged my room for the first time since highschool, and cleaned it up (also, for the first time since highschool...).

It's been good being back home because it gives me a chance to hang out with all my boys from back home. English had a week off from work when I got back, so we chilled almost every day. Working out, watching movies, chatting over some ice caps, and and just catching up in general. Only one thing could have made it better....I sure do miss Dean. This summer could have been one of our best ones yet....

I've still got to find a job. In all honesty, I haven't been as diligent as I should be. I got an IT job from an agency working with databases and webpages. It's a full time position that pays around 40K a year. However, right now, I'm still looking to break into a entry level finance position and move away from IT. If that fails, then I'll see about doing some IT for a year or two, but hoepfully it won't have to come to that.

I did have a temp job doing some data entry for a day and a half. The job was easy, and I made some money, so that's always good. Anything to pull me out of the red. The only thing is, I wound up spending it that weekend. Bought a new pair of Air Force 1's which more or less evened it out.

As for my plans this week, I figure tomorrow I'll do some hardcore applying and see if anything pans out. Then on Thursday I'm gonna hit up Lucid for Luca's birthday/Canada Day bash, and then on Friday, I'm going to hit up Wasaga with English and the guys. Should be a good weekend!

Pictures are up!!!

ok, well, some pictures are up. I still have to get most of the pictures off the guys from Munich to Amsterdam. And there are a few I need to get from Jenn of Antibes. Also, My picture taking came to a screeching halt after my memory card messed up in Paris. So, I lost a couple of hundred pictures as a result. Sad times. anyways, you can at least some of them here:

The Best and Worse of Eurotrip 2005

I've decided to compile a best and worst list for laughs and perhaps to help anyone else plan their Eurotrip:

Best City For Culture: Paris. Just so many museums and art galleries. Plus you can get the Museum pass and see all of them for a mere 18 Euro's.

Best City For Food: Paris. Just so damn good. pate, cheese, wine, cavier...they know how to eat!

Worst City For Food: probably Amsterdamn. The food was bland. And the McKrocket I had from McDonald's might very well be the most disgusting thing I ate during the whole trip. It wasn't even a meat burger. it was a gravy patty....with little chunks of beef. ugh....

Most Expensive City: Easily London. It's just nuts!

Most Affordable City: Prague. Great Beer and a good meal for about $10 Euros. Nice...

Best Museum: hmmm, went to so many. Musee D'Orsay had the best paintings. The Louvre was good for the DaVinci Code references. And The Uffizi was good for the David and because it just so happened to be free admission cause of culture week (but the lineup for the Uffizi is insane!!!).

Most Romantic City: gonna go with Venice on this one. restaurants outside by the waterfront, music playing, moonlight on the water, no cars, nice walks along the river...just a beautiful setting. Of course, I was there by myself, so it was a waste, but someday...

Most Exciting City: gonna go with Interlaken. White Water rafting, canyoning, paragliding, skydiving...it's a thrill a minute there. So many outdoor activities.

Attraction With The Most Impact: The Anne Frank house. You'll need the day to recover.

Attraction With The Least Impact: The Mechanical Clock in Munich that has a little show twice a day. It was the biggest waste of time ever! We were expecting some crazy mechanical Disney production. It was far from it...

Best Hostel: Wombat's in Munich. Great room, great people, great bar. The Flying Pig and Generator weren't bad, but I think Wombat's was best overall.

Worst Hostel: La Canna in Amsterdam. That place was just disgusting....and scary!

Best Club: 4004 in munich. Huge club, with 5 rooms, and a good ratio of guys to girls...hot girls too.

Worst club: hmmmm...hard to say, I only went to 2 clubs. I don't count the lounges on the pub crawl "clubs" cause they would easily be the worst.

Most Comfortable City: Amsterdamn. It's like Canada, just more laxed. Most people can speak english, and it's really multicutural. It was just so chill.

Hottest Girls: Tough one. I think the guys would say Barcelona, but I wasn't there! For me, I think maybe Paris? maybe Munich?

Ugliest Girls: London wasn't really all that great. Though it had it's moments.

Best Painting or Sculpture: Michaelagelo's David at Accademia in Florence. Truly amazing

Best Travelling companion: My baby of course. :P

Worse Travelling companion: hahaha....well, to be the best, sometimes you need to show me the worst. ;)

Scariest Moment: probably when the german police woke me up on the train to search my bags for drugs (while going to interlaken from Amsterdam). Though the train cops that thought I called them stupid was a little nerve racking.

Best Cockblocker: Tusheyn (Thanuja's brother). Everytime I even start talking to a girl, he's in for the cockblock. you have to work fast around this man, or he'll just swoop in and take all the credit.

Best cockblock: Though Thanuja's brother is the best cockblocker, the best cockblock has to go to Eli. Here's the situation:

I start talking to this girl who is checking in. Talked to her for about 10 minutes, and she tells me that she's pretty hungry, and that she wants to grab some food after she takes a shower. Now, I know we're about to head out to book a hostel online and then grab some food. So, in the hopes of perhaps getting her to come out with us to eat, I ask the guys what the plan was for the night, expecting them to say go on the internet and get something to eat (which is what we discussed). However, this little break in my conversation with this girl, somehow meant open season for them to talk to her and this is what happened:

Dash: So, guys, what are we going to do now?
Farooq: I don't know, we have to go book our hostel
Eli to the girl: so, did you just get here?
girl: yea, I just came from Prague
Eli: oh yea? we have to catch a train there tonight

....wait for it...wait for it....

Eli:"You should come to Prague with us!"
girl: "uhhhhh...."

OVER!!! Successful blocking of the cock! Dash looking in awe at the masterful cockblock.

There was no way she was coming out with us after that. haha, so funny. "you should come to prague with us" has since been our cockblocking motto, and has been said to death for the remainder of the trip.

Best Moment: gong down the rapids with Jenn. Wouldn't have had it any other way.

Funniest Moment: I don't know. There were too many. "You should come to Prague" was pretty good though...

Best Beer: Pilsner Urquell in Prague. Though the beer at Wombat's in Munich was pretty smooth as well

Worst Beer: Whatever it was that we drank at the club in Prague. That beer was complete crap! pretty sure it was non-alcoholic.

Last days in Europe, Cannes, Antibes, and London

I know this is a little backward, writing about the days leading up to my return to Canada, but oh well, deal with it!

I spent the afternoon of the 6th lying on the beach, just soaking up the sun and swimming every now and then. There were a decent amount of people there, and being Europe, alot of women were topless. Can't complain about that.

It got a bit cloudy by 5:30, so I decided to head back to the hostel, grab a shower, then head back out get some food and surf the net. Well, I made it to the hostel, took a shower, but before I left, this chinese guy starts talking to me. He asks me whether I could wait for him and show him around. I didn't want to be rude, so I figure I might as well. While I waited for him, I just talked to some girl from Winnipeg, and killed time. I also talked to this Irish lass who worked at the hostel to see if they were going to do anything, and they said they might head to the pub and asked if I wanted to come along. I figured I might as well, since I didn't have anything better to do anyways.

So, I take the Chinese guy around, and show him the beach and the place where they have the film festival. He flipped upon seeing Sharon Stone's handprint in the ground. Apparently he loves her off. Which gave me some relief, cause with the way things have been going lately, I wouldn't be surprised if he hit on me while I showed him around or anything. I showed him the beach, and we just chilled and talked for an hour or so about our lives and what not. He grew up in China but went to school in Vienna for the past 4 years. It's impressive, cause he knows Chinese, mandarin, and a little bit of english. Anyways, I look at the time, and figure we should head back to the hostel cause the girls were waiting for us to go out. However, he apparently doens't drink, and suggests that we instead go to the mountain top to look at the sunset, cause apparently (according to a postcard he's seen), it is very beautiful....yea...anyways, I politely decline, and we head back to the hostel.

he decided not to come out, so this chick from cali, the Irish girl, and I head out to an Irish pub and grab a few beers. It was expensive, at least compared to most places I've been to in Europe. nevertheless, we chat over some beers, then we head over to another irish pub down the street cause it had a pool table.
Played two games of pool, and one game of fooseball. Won all 3, which I was happy about. Gotta represent Canada. The rest of the night was more or less just chatting over beer with the Irish girl and some other Irish folk in the bar. The cali girl left us to hit up some gay bars, I don't know, maybe she misses San Francisco or something.

Woke up the next day, left the hostel, and went to Antibes to meet up with Jenn who was staying at her great aunt's place. Her aunt was really cool, and so was her husband, although he only spoke french so, it was a bit hard communicating at times. Still, they were really nice and hospitable. they picked me up from the train station, took us to the beach, made us lunch, and even drove me back to the train station. The day was beautiful and we spent most of it just lying on the beach, just soaking up the sun. it was great.

After saying my goodbyes to Jenn and her great aunt and uncle, I was on the train for Nice where I had to catch a place to Stansted airport in London. I accidentally got off one stop too late, which wasn't my fault. I should have gotten off at Nice-St. Augustine, instead of Nice-Ville, but come on, you would think the airport was in the ville right? right? Anyways, I cause a bus for 4 euros, and it took me to where I needed to go.

The plane got into Stansted at around 10:15, which is a good 30 minutes earlier then scheduled, so that was good. However, the only bus that goes to Heathrow Airport (where my flight to Toronto was leaving from) wasn't leaving until 11:59. Not only that, but it cost 25 pounds to take it!!! Which is like $70 CAD!!!! so on top of the flight which was 141 Euros, it cost me about $270 CAD to get from Nice to Heathrow in London. ridiculous!

but what could I do right? so I take the bus, and it gets into Heathrow at around 1 a.m. I wander around, looking for a bench in the airport to sleep on, but they're all already taken by other travellers. Finally I find a set of empty benches in the arrivals area, but guess what? they had just finished vaccuming it or something, cause all the benches were moist and damp. But I'm a trooper. So I just sucked it up, took my travel pillow out, the blanket I took from the plane, and slept on the damp bench. a couple of other people were doing the same as well, so it's not like I'm the only moron.

Woke up around 6 to the sights of arriving passengers and the people that came to pick them up. I brushed my teeth, grabbed some food from one of the stores, and went to check in. I did this all very slowly and I wandered around the airport a bit so I didn't check in until 8:15.

The next 3 hours went by rather slowly. I walked around all the shops, and the duty free stores, before settling down on a chair and waited for them to show which gate I should go to board at. a couple of times I slept, but for the most part, I was awake and just staring at the board. It wasn't until 10:53 that it showed the gate I was supposed to be at. Considering my flight was scheduled to leave at 11:05, it didn't look good. Indeed the flight was delayed, and didn't take off until 12:05.

the plane ride was more or less uneventful. I slept through a third of it. I ate, read, and watched the two movies for the rest. I was able to get them to give me an extra meal at the beginning which was sweet, cause I was starving! The movies shown were "Because of Winn-Dixie" a very overly sentimental movie that lacked depth and flow, and "My favourite Year" an old 80's film with Peter O'toole which was actually pretty good.

The girl who sat beside me was a bit annoying, cause she seemed really ignorant. She asked me if I was from Thailand, which was really wierd, cause it seems so random. But I spoke to her for a bit already, and we're headed to Toronto, and I havea maple leaf on my bag. So, naturally it would make sense to assume I was Canadian. Then she asked me if there were many asian people in London. Like how the hell am I supposed to know? just cause I'm asian? the best was when I took out my ipod, and she goes to me and asks "how much did you buy it. is it cheaper in China?". honestly! I shoulda asked her if she was from Jamaica, or how she must miss chicken and rice and see how that goes.

Anyways, got into Toronto an hour later then expected, but all is well. I got back in one piece, safe and sound!

Back in Canada!

The Great Eurotrip is now officially done and in the books. It's a bit sad now that it's all over, I definitely miss waking up and exploring a new town and meeting new people, but I'm also glad to be home, where I have a full wardrobe, laundry facilities, my car, my internet, my tv, my bed, etc...

For all those who didn't have a chance to go, I can't stress enough how great it was. It was one of the best experiences of my life, and I strongly urge everyone to grab a buddy and do it! You won't regret it. The memories, the experience, and the laughs will last for a lifetime.

That being said, Here's a quick recap of my last few days, and then I'll write the bests and worsts of Europe, as well as a more in depth analysis and summary of every city I visited. The latter part will probably take a while, but I have all the time in the world now.

quick update: Interlaken and Cannes

I went off to Interlaken to meet up with Jenn and it was great. the mountains, and the lakes were beautiful. We signed up to go canyoning on the 4th, but they cancelled it! something about the water being too high. booooo!!! So, we went white water rafting instead, which was fun, but I think canyoning would have been better.

Anyways, now we're in Cannes, and it's really nice. Time to hit the beach!

Amsterdam day 2. Sticky Icky icky

Went to the Van Gogh museum yesterday and it was awesome. Original paintings, by Van Gogh and a little escription about each piece. It was more expensive then almost any other museum we've been to, but it was well worth it. You can see his transition from when he started out, till his tragic death. Truly amazing.

In the museum they also had works by this other artist. I forget his name, but it was more of a controversial type of art, through dance, video, and other types of media. the thing that tripped me up the most, is that upon entering, you see this video of a japanese woman boucing up and down on this huge rubber ball. We stared at it for a while to determine whether it was on a loop or not. We couldn't come up with a final conclusion.

so, we go to the rest of the exhibit on another floor, and there were just all these freaky ass videos of naked people rolling around, or doing wierd things. but the craziest thing, is that when you turned the corner all you see, in the center of the room, is the japanese chick bouncing up and down on a rubber ball with a camera in her face!!! For like hours, she's just sitting there, boucing up and down on the rubber ball! expressionless and apparently not exhausted! It was messed! Imagine seeing that high?? It was just so trippy.

Later on we just got some food, and went to a coffeeshop to chill (if you know what I mean). Let's just say, Umu got MESSED UP!!! It was all good, but then he passed out right there in the coffeeshop. When he finally came to, it was only cause he wanted to puke. so, he rushed up and wobbles around trying to get to the bathroom, making a huge scene, and knocking down a couple of stools. people were all scrambling to get out of his way, cause they were afraid he was going to Puke on him. It was crazy! he wound up making it to the bathroom, but cloghged up one urinal, and the sink. In the end, I managed to get him, and the rest of my boys home safe and sound. Thank God!

We're going to head out to the Anne Frank museum today, and chill in RLD a little bit I think. Unlike last night, we'll still in the hostel and do our business. That way we're close to our home base. then we can see whether we want to head back out.
