Because Without You There Would Be No Way
So if you're working downtown, you'll know that for the past couple of months, United Way has been having there days of caring, which is actually more like weeks of caring. You'll find that every company has some sort of fundraiser, or event that goes to support the United Way. At Russell, 8 employees (myself included) went to help out at a food drive and food bank somewhere in the GTA. I was part of a group of 4 that went to a food bank, where we unloaded food off a truck, stored it on shelves, and did some general house cleaning. It was actually in a community center, so it was alot better then some food banks that I've volunteered at. I think there's another United Way event happening at work on Monday morning for halloween. Apparently, some of the managers will be dressing up as forest animals....that should be inresting....
The past few weeks have consisted primarily of working out and going to work. On the weekends, I've either gone to Hamilton to see Jenn, gone out with Jenn in Toronto, clubbing with the guys, or just slept and chilled. I tried to keep as much of a balanced life as I can.
The Adelaide Club
I've joined a new gym. I had a pretty serious accident at my old gym, and decided that it was too unsafe to continue to work out there. I was using the pec deck (butterfly machine), and the pin came out of the weights. This caused me to jerk slightly foward and the handles to fly into my temples, creating a gash over my right eye. At first I didn't even realize it, but then Martin pointed out that I was bleeding. I cupped my hand over my eye, and there was a huhe pool of blood. So, I rushed to the bathroom, washed it, and put some paper towels on it. The employees at the community center were completely useless, and had no idea what to do. I went through their first aid kit, took some gauze, and had Martin drive me home. I told my mom what happened, and she drove me to the hospital to get it stitiched up. one day, and 3 stitches later, I went back to the community center, complained, and cancelled my membership. Luckily, the Adelaide Club in Toronto was having a 2 week trial membership for Russell employees so, I worked out there until I could decide on a more permanent gym. It costs $100 a month for a membership at Adelaide, and even with the subsidy my company provides, it still comes out to a pretty penny. But after talking to the the membership rep, he told me that members under 30, only have to pay $67/month. So, all in all, I think it's a good deal, and signed up. The equipment is very safe, and the staff is really knowledgeable.
Convocation Weekend
My convocation was last Saturday, but I decided not to attend. I've been to a convocation before, and it seems really boring. In addition, all my friends are in CS, and their convocation was in the afternoon, so I wouldn't really be convocating with anyone I knew. For the most part, Graduating is bittersweet for me. When I entered University, I was a bright-eyed 18 year old who's life was had no where to go but up. 5 years later, I'm a much more mature and jaded individual, who's realized that $1 dollar and my degree is worth nothing more then $1 and a piece of paper. In this life, the things that will get you to where you want to be is your own drive and perseverance. Your degree will get you that first interview after University, your willingness to succeed will get you your career.
So instead of going to Convo, I met up with Mohammed, Seiji, and James for dinner and pool. We went to Lucy's for dinner, I got the catfish and it was pretty damn good. I didn't play as well as I wanted to at pool, but still managed to win 5 out of 7 games. 4 team games and 1 cuthroat. After pool we went to to Tim's and met up with Shaz and Ben for coffee. Everyone's in different places, doing different things, and it makes you wonder how much longer you can still get together for a quick game of pool, or coffee at Timmy's. For now, it's fine, but when people start having their own families, you can see how there won't be any time for it.
